Women waste pickers in Mumbai received Ayushman Bharat Health Cards and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits on July 7 at a TB awareness camp held in Chembur.
The camp, offering free health check-ups, was inaugurated by Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma at the Fine Arts Cultural Centre, Chembur, Mumbai.
It was launched along with the NAMASTE Scheme as part of the ‘TB Mukt Mumbai’ campaign, an initiative of Maharashtra Lok Bhavan carried out with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Film star Jackie Shroff joined the Governor in handing out the health cards and PPE kits to the women waste pickers present.
Attendees included Sushila Sable, Vice President of the International Alliance of Waste Pickers, Asha Marathe, Corporator and Chairperson of the Ward Committee, and BMC’s Additional Municipal Commissioners Prajakta Lavangare Verma and Dr. Vipin Sharma.
Also present were Jyoti Mhapsekar, Dr. Prashant Narnaware, Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Kiran Dighavkar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner for Solid Waste Management at BMC, and women waste pickers from the Deonar area.
